Certified wood
We always know the origin of the wood we use

Metsäliitto is a leader in developing and using wood origin management systems. The certified ISO 9001 quality system and ISO 14001 environmental management system used by Metsäliitto include a wood origin management system.

This enables us to always know the origin of the wood raw material we use. Harvesting utilises the latest technology, such as the latest information systems and digital maps. By means of these systems the wood transport chain can be traced from the forest to the mill. The processes are clearly documented and all stages and the related details can be found later when retrieving the information.

We support forest certification

Metsäliitto is a promoter of forest certification suitable for local conditions. Forest certification is a voluntary, market-based instrument which helps to show the buyers of wood and paper products that the decision to purchase the product supports sustainable forestry. Certification is based on an inspection carried out by a party independent of the product's manufacturing and marketing chain, and it consists of two parts: forest certification and chain of custody certification. Voluntary-based certification supplements environmental and forest laws and facilitates international surveys on the criteria of sustainable forestry.

The majority of the wood used by Finnforest is sourced from the forests owned by the 130,000 members of the Metsäliitto Cooperative. Ninety-five per cent of the wood we use is PEFC certified. We also know the origin of the non-certified five per cent.

Almost all of our production units use the Chain of Custody Certification (CoC). Chain of Custody Certification verifies the journey of wood from the forest to the ready-made product, and the product can be awarded the appropriate label. The majority of Finnforest products have the PEFC label.
