Finnforest ThermoWood® is produced with a patented three-stage treatment process that controls heat, time and moisture to close wood fibers and remove natural sugars. No chemicals are used, so it is very eco-friendly.
This all-natural, solid wood product offers greater dimensional stability, along with improved decay and insect resistance. The wood is lighter in weight, resin-free and has an attractive, consistent color. Made with PEF-Ccertified Nordic Pine and Spruce from sustainable, managed forests in Finland, it is a naturally carbon-neutral product. The production process uses about the same energy as kiln drying.
The thermal processing to create Finnforest ThermoWood is a method of precisely heating the wood in an oven to collapse the cells and cook out the normal nutrients and resins in the wood. Temperatures used in the thermal process reach as high as 413 degrees Fahrenheit. The cooking process lasts up to 25 hours. With the resins "cooked out", there is no nutritional value for insects. With the cells collapsed, the cellular structure is changed so that the wood resists absorbtion of water, making it more stable in exterior applications.
When left untreated and exposed to UV light, Finnforest ThermoWood weathers from its dark brown color to a soft grey. It accepts surface treatments well - both because of its stability and because there is no resin leakage.
Ideal for siding and decking, the product is suitable for interior or exterior use. Finnforest ThermoWood is available in standard profiles and several lengths. It is readily shipped to any point in North America.
Finnforest ThermoWood is an environmentally-friendly product manufactured in Finland of pine, birch and aspen from forests managed under the Finnish Forest Certification System. Pine is the primary species imported to American markets. The forestry is audited by the Bureau Veritas (BV) according to the ISO14001 environmental standard and the ISO 9001 quality standard. The wood is procured according to the Program for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC) standard.
